5 Ways to Save Money for Your Wedding
Friday, 17 June 2011 16:36
It’s June and we know a lot of you are getting married.  So, we thought we’d try and help out with our 10 money saving wedding tips.  For us, it’s always good to save a little money so you can put it towards other things (those Jimmy Choo’s or Manolo’s you’ve been eyeing for your wedding shoes).  So, here are some of our best money saving tips for your wedding.

1. Negotiate upfront with the photographer to get all of the jpeg images and rights – Most of you may not be thinking about this right now, but one of the biggest bills you get slapped with after your wedding is for your photographs.  Yup, that’s right.  Those beautiful pictures that you want to buy?  Each one will cost you at least $150 or more.  So, if you want 10, you’re already out more than $1000.  Many of you will spend $3000- $5000 more for the photos since you’ll want some, your parents will want some, and you’ll want to get an album.  So, one tip to do ahead of time is to negotiate with your photographer to buy all of the photos.  Then, you can take it to the nearest Costco and get them printed out for a $1.  Or you can go online and make your own photo album for $50.  Whatever you want, this is one of the biggest money savers we have for weddings.

2. Check department stores for your bridesmaid dresses:  For those brides that are buying the dresses for their bridesmaids, or for those who aren’t, but still want to help their friends save money, one tip is to check regular department stores for bridesmaid dresses.  Places like Nordstrom or Macy’s will have fantastic summer dresses that can double as bridesmaid dresses and are much cheaper because they don’t carry the label “wedding.”  Fantastic dresses from BCBG, Laundry, Max Studio and more can be found for less than $200 in a department store.  Plus, your bridesmaids will love you for finding them a dress that they can wear again!

3. Buy flip flops from Old Navy or Target or Walmart:  If you’re having a beach wedding and need some wedding flip flops, look no further than Old Navy or Target or Walmart.  The flip flops can be as low as $3 and you can buy them for your whole wedding party in a ton of different sizes and styles.  They’ll love you for giving them something comfortable, and you’ll love the small bill that you receive for buying so many pairs.

4. Priceline your hotel for your honeymoon or even wedding night:  Priceline or hotwire can be your best friend and save you a ton of money on your hotel and car rental for your honeymoon or wedding.  Plus, here is the secret to bidding success – check 2 sites:  Biddingfortravel.com and Bettterbidding.com.  These 2 sites will give you their best guess on what the hotel will be that you end up getting.  Most of the time, they are right and you will get one of the hotels listed on the site.  If you are confused, the members will help you figure out what you might receive.  Plus, only bid for 5 star or 4 star hotels and you won’t ever go wrong.

5. Skip the wedding favors:  How many times do you even remember the wedding favors that you received at a wedding?  Probably none.  We say, skip the wedding favors and save time and money.  If you really want to give something, put some silver and gold Hershey kisses in the center of each table.  At the end of the night, your guests will love a bit of chocolate, and they will appreciate how cute they look in the center of the table.  But, otherwise, nobody will really remember the frame or photo or something that you spent hours making or buying.

5 Fantastic Gift Ideas Off the Wedding Registry
Thursday, 09 June 2011 14:07
Today’s article in the Wall Street Journal talks about wedding registries and how much they have changed.  More and more, couples are registering for other things besides china and first-time home gifts.  An article in the Smart Money Blog talks about beating “Wedding Gift Sticker-Shock.”  So, we sat down to come up with a list of 5 things that you can buy a couple that aren’t on their registry, but that they will truly love.  Here are our ideas.  If you’ve thought of others, please share.

1. Wine or Cheese or Food of the Month Club membership – What better way to give a gift than one that comes every month?  These days, the wine or cheese or food of the month clubs are becoming more and more popular.  These are fantastic and fun and your friends can look forward to something coming every month.  One of our new favorites is the Foodzie Tasting Box.  This is a mixed collection of different foods to taste and try.  A 6 month subscription costs $100 and every box comes with a mix of a lot of different things.
2. Gift Certificate to a Restaurant – This is one of our favorites. If you and the couple have gone to a favorite restaurant before or if you have a restaurant you love, why not get the couple a gift certificate to that restaurant?  This way, the couple can have a good time and remember the time they spent together with you.  Plus, this allows you to set the amount you want to give them instead of buying a particular item from the registry.
Restaurant Gift Certificate

3. Payment for a specific activity – Find out where the couple is going on a honeymoon or find a local activity to sign the couple up for.  Whether it’s sailing or golf or snorkeling or scuba diving, paying for an activity will create a memory to last a lifetime.  Plus, sometimes couples would never think of this themselves so giving them an activity is a fun way for them to explore something new.
Snorkeling Lessons

4. Tickets to a concert, museum membership, or amusement park membership – Know a couple that loves Disneyland or U2 or Black-Eyed Peas?  Why not get them tickets to an upcoming concert or a one-year museum membership or 2 year-long passes to Disneyland?  The couple may never splurge on this themselves, but if you get it for them, they will be able to enjoy that experience for a long time.
Black Eyed Peas Tickets

5. Finally, the most practical idea that we’ve seen is a 6 month or 3 month maid service.  After the wedding, the couple will find themselves overwhelmed with Thank You cards, gifts, and cleaning up and moving in together.  Why not get them maid service that will take the burden off of them?  Having a fantastic cleaning service come and clean the house for them will take the stress off and give them more free time to spend with each other.  As many couples saying, it all starts at home and arguments over the little things are the most stressful things a couple can experience, especially a newly married one.

Finally, we don't add this to the list, but if you know the bride, the final option is just to give her a new pair of wedding shoes or something else that only she likes.  Why not buy her that dress she'd been eyeing or the shoes she's coveted for the last few months?  We're sure her husband would be happy to not have to buy that item and your friend will be happy to receive something besides household goods.

Bridesmaid Dresses from Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale
Thursday, 26 May 2011 13:24
It’s the Nordstrom half-yearly sale for women and children.  For those brides who are getting married this summer or fall and looking for some great bridesmaid dresses, this is your opportunity.  Not only are there tons of styles, but there are a lot of good styles on sale.
Check out some of the fantastic dresses we found below.

The first one is by Suzi Chin.  This silver pink bridesmaid dress is beautiful and elegant with lots of little details at the bodice.  It should fit most girls perfectly and it’s 50% off.  A steal for you and your girls.

This next dress is the Glint One Shoulder Faille Dress.  It is 40% off and comes  in many other colors.  We love this royal blue color, but also are partial to the light green color.  We think both could work for many different wedding colors.  The one shoulder is a bit more trendy, but it definitely looks great on most women.
Glint Bridesmaid Dress
If you’re looking for long bridesmaid dresses, check out these next 2 from BCBG.  The first one is in a gorgeous red.  It is empire style which will allow your girls to eat and enjoy themselves and still look slim and skinny.  We love how it cinches in the middle and drapes out from there.
BCBG Bridesmaid Dress

The second one ties elegantly at the waist.  The purple shimmery color is simply beautiful.  The strapless style is very pretty and the empire waist will again let your girls have fun and still look great.
BCBG Purple Bridesmaid Dress

There’s another one from Laundry that we really like too.  We especially love the fuschia color. It’s bright, fun and playful and it really stands out against a white bridal gown.  We can just imagine beautiful green hydrangea bouquets against these gorgeous bright dresses.
Laundry Bridesmaid Dress

The best part, all of these long bridesmaid dresses are 40% off.
The half-yearly sale ends on Saturday.  Shop online or shop in store, but order now.  The best part about buying from Nordstrom is that you can return the items at any time.  Their liberal return policy allows you to order a ton of different styles up front and then make your final decision after you’ve shown your bridesmaids.  So, go ahead, start shopping at Nordstroms.

Bridesmaids Wearing Different Wedding Shoes?
Wednesday, 11 May 2011 16:30
Bridesmaids Wearing Different Wedding Shoes?

A post on at the Green Wedding Shoes blog reminded me of a discussion we’ve had recently about bridesmaid wedding shoes.  The big question was this – if everyone is wearing the same bridesmaid dress, should everyone also wear the same shoes?

Our stylists discussed this for quite awhile.  Some people really liked the uniformity of the same shoes under the same dress.  Some felt that it was important, especially if the bridesmaids were wearing short dresses where everyone could see the shoes.  Finally, some felt that it was way too much for the bride to ask the bridesmaids to do this unless the bride was willing to buy the shoes for her bridesmaids.  As a bridesmaid, you are already paying for the bridal shower and the bachelorette party and most likely, the dress.  So, after plunking down more than $500 on average, you have to buy the wedding shoes?  So many of the stylists felt like this was way too much for a bride to ask.

So, instead of debating, we decided to look for pictures to get a better idea of what it looks like with the same shoes and different bridesmaid shoes.   Here’s what we found.

First, check out these photos of bridesmaids with the same shoes:

What are the pros?
1) Everyone looks uniform
2) Nobody wears something you don’t like
3) Since the dresses are the same, the same shoes makes it look really nice
4) No surprises where girls choose shoes that clash
5) Shoes can match with your wedding colors
6) Somebody has to buy all of the shoes and spend more money

Second, check out these photos with bridesmaids that got to wear different shoes:

Image from http://www.brideswardrobe.com/guide/

What are the pros?
1) Everyone looks unique
2) The bridesmaid shoes are pretty fabulous
3) You can do something fun wear everyone wears a different color that matches the different color bouquets
4) Girls can wear shoes that they are comfortable in so they won’t trip
5) Shoes can still match the wedding colors and they might be able to match multiple colors
6) No pressure on the bride or bridesmaids to spend more money on shoes since they can choose their own

In looking at this list, it seems like the different shoes allow your bridesmaids to be more individual and unique.  They also can save some money since you aren’t asking them to buy new shoes.  If you want all of your bridesmaids to wear the same wedding shoes, then you are asking them to spend a bit more money unless you are willing to pay for them.  But, the look is really uniform and you know the pictures won’t look funny.  Plus, just in case you have that one friend who tends to choose some tacky shoes, you can make sure you avoid that.

So, what’s the verdict?  There really isn’t one.  We think it depends on the bride, the look she wants, the bridesmaids that she has, and whether or not she wants to be more free with the wedding look or she wants to control it a bit more.  The only big tip we do come away with?  Decide early.  Do not wait until the last minute to make this important shoe decision.  Make sure you know what type of wedding shoes you want your bridesmaids to wear so you give them time to buy them or find the right ones and break them in and practice walking down the aisle in them.

Find Me the Perfect Bridal Flats
Thursday, 05 May 2011 14:36
Brides-to-be love their heels and pumps, but the request we got today is focused on wedding flats. Here’s the email we got from Johanna:

“Hi!  I just bought the J. Crew Marquis gown and I need help!  I am 6 feet tall and don’t want to tower over my fiancé so I want a pair of flats.  Sandals or ballet flats are fine, I’d consider either.  We’re having a wedding in a garden so the shoes should match that garden atmosphere.  Any suggestions?

Best,
Johanna”

She attached a picture below so we could find the best bridal flats to pair with her dress.
J. Crew Wedding Dress

Once they saw the wedding dress, our stylists started their search for the best wedding flats to match. Here are their suggestions Johanna:

Stylist Stacy Evans
Love the goddess type gown you chose Johanna!  It definitely exudes a romantic aura and I have just the shoes to match. To me, all you need to do is add some simple jewelry and romantic shoes and your wedding look will be complete. Your wedding gown is beautiful on its own with its gorgeous tulle skirt and silver rhinestone beads adorning the bodice. To me, I would look for a few rhinestones on the shoes to complement the dress.  Here are a few gorgeous shoes that I found for you:

Silver:  Colorful Creations Blast – I love these gorgeous flip flops because they are simple and beautiful.  The straps have little rhinestone ornaments decorating the front, but they won’t overwhelm your dress.
White: Touch Ups Anette:  These classic flats have an open toe and a beautiful rhinestone decorating the front.  They have a small wedge and little pleats in front that are both dainty and feminine.
Blue: Kelsi Dagger Women’s Monacco Sandal- This sandal has beautiful pleated ruffles across the front adding a romantic feel to your dress.  I think the blue would look great against your dress, although ivory works as well.

Stylist Tricia Johnson
Congratulations on your wedding Johanna, and for finding such a beautiful dress. The glamorous bodice, sweet asymmetrical shoulder silhouette, and the carefully embellished beads create a nice, soft look that will surely make you the star on your wedding day. To add spark to your look and create a nice contrast with your wedding dress, I looked for shoes with rhinestones or roses that will really complete the look.  Here are the shoes I found for you:

Blue:  Bandolino Bestseller:  I agree with Stacy and think that you should consider a pair of blue shoes.  The blue will contrast well with your dress and give you something unique to show off in your garden wedding.  Plus, I love the little roses on the t-strap of these shoes!

White:
Calvin Klein Rya (found in our flats section):  I love the gorgeous rhinestones on the front of these shoes.  I think they’ll help to emphasize the sparkle you already have on your dress.

Touch-Ups Ashley (found in our Wedding Flip Flops section) :  Love how the straps create an elegant design on your feet.  Plus, the best part is that there are tiny beaded rhinestones covering everything.

Stylist Samantha Lin
Your dress is so stunning that I would go with a simple look for your wedding flats so the shoes don’t overwhelm the dress.  Here are a few suggestions:

White:  Seychelles Araxi:  These sandals will stay on your feet and complement the dress well.  They don’t sparkle, but they still look pretty.
White:  Touch-ups Shirley Bridal Shoes:  These shoes are simple and pretty and don’t overwhelm your dress.

So, there you have it.  You can find all of the shoes in the following sections:

Any other suggestions you would give ladies?
