Choosing Your Platform Wedding Shoes

Wednesday, 19 May 2010 11:15

Many brides have written to me asking if I thought that platform wedding shoes would look “unbridelike” or even a bit too sexy.  Yes, in the past, platforms have always been associated with a sexier, sultry and the “been around the block” look.  But, I’m here to tell you that this is no longer the case.  Those platforms were sometimes plastic or made in really loud colors with a really large platform in front and a really thick heel.  They looked something like the picture below with the 2 inch heel in front.  Many of them were clear for some reason.

Stripper platforms

OK brides, today’s platforms are definitely not like that.  Countless designers are making gorgeous platforms in satin and other luxurious materials.  The platforms of today are elegant and sophisticated.  Sometimes, you can’t even tell that the woman is wearing platforms until you look more closely.  This is because the designer has created a more even look.  Plus, the front of the platform bridal shoes is not super thick.  Most of the time, it is 1 inch or less so it is much more subtle that you are wearing platforms.

If you are worried, I’ve come up with a few criteria to help you choose the perfect pair of wedding platform shoes.  Use this criteria and you won’t get accused of wearing “stripper platforms.”

1.    Choose a shoe where the front of the heel is no higher than 1 inch.

2.    Choose heels that are no higher than 4 inches.  You might be able to get away with 4 and a half, but really, don’t go higher than that.  The point of bridal platform shoes is to make your feet more comfortable since they won’t have to arch that high.  You also want to be taller, but going with something higher than 4 and a half inches makes it much more obvious that you have such high heels.

3.    Buy a shoe made of good material like satin.  Pay more for that material.  Stay away from the more plastic materials.

4.    For the front of the heel, try to choose a shoe where there is no line separating the bottom from the rest of the shoe.  Also, look for something really smooth like this one below.

See how the extra height in front is hidden by the shoe so you can't really tell that there's an extra heel?  This is what you want when looking for a shoe that is delicate and elegant.  You can find this shoe in our platform bridal shoes section.

5.    Choose shoes that have delicate straps or decorated with elegant rosettes or bows.  Look for something that is elegant and delicate.  Just because they are platforms doesn’t mean they can’t be elegant.

6.    For the heel, look for something that is thinner and not thick and chunky.  Thick and chunky will look more garish and will stand out a lot more. You want something subtle.

7.    Finally, in terms of colors, I would recommend ivory platform wedding shoes or white ones.  This will match with your dress better and will blend it well.  If you want to go with colored shoes, try a blue or purple.  These don’t stand out as much against the dark ground.

Our shoe stylists have chosen a ton of these shoes in our platform wedding shoes section.  These are all elegant, beautiful and the platform is not obvious.
