We're so happy to have Leon Turetsky, professional ballroom dance instructor do a guest post for us. Although we are always obsessing over the latest wedding shoes, we think the wedding dance you will be doing is just as important. This is where you can show off your shoes and kick them up a little for everyone to see. Below, Leon tells us a little bit more about how to choose a wedding dance for your first dance. From Leon Turetsky: Having a beautiful first dance will add greatly to your wedding. However, before signing up for dance lessons, you must choose the style of your wedding dance. It is critical that you pick a dance which you and your fiance will both enjoy learning because you will spend at least 5-10 dance lessons on it. If you already have a song in mind, your teacher will show you the different dances you can do to your piece of music. If you do not have a song in mind, you can pick the dance first and then choose a song based on it. No matter what, you will still need to decide which dance to do. One thing that will ease the decision process is to know what you want the end product to look like on the floor. Do you want to have a traditional and classy look to you when you are dancing? Or do you want to opt in for the more modern and fun look on the floor? Your personality and the type of crowd you are expecting will help you decide. Below I present the traditional/classy option and the modern/fun option with 5 dances that you can choose from. Option 1: Traditional/Classy Dances such as: Waltz, Foxtrot. If you imagine yourself moving gracefully across the floor, then you want the Waltz or the Foxtrot for your first dance. These two dances are characterized by a slow tempo with smooth gliding movement across the floor. They require the traditional dance hold where both partners stay in close contact for most of the dance. One of the best benefits about choosing these 2 classical dances is that they tend to circle around the floor, so all your guests will be able to see you as you pass them! Option 2: Modern/Fun Option Dances such as: Rumba, Swing, Salsa. If you like to show off a little bit and want something more exciting and less traditional, then you will want to choose to the Rumba, Swing or Salsa for your wedding. These dances have a very free dance hold and are mostly danced on one spot (meaning they don’t travel much). The Rumba and Salsa in particular have the Latin flavor to them and make for a really exciting performance. All these dances are very free in their movements and incorporate lots of turns, spins and arm styling. One thing to note, these dances are quicker and more exciting than the above option, but they are a little more difficult to learn. In conclusion, decide on the picture that you want to portray on the dance floor and then choose the dance accordingly. Good luck!
